'62 Roughers 40th Reunion--Newsletter Vol 6.

Vol. 6
Sept 17, 2002

Folks,

This is the sixth in a planned series of newsletters about our 40th reunion. To read past newsletters, click here. If, for some reason, you're unable to access the link, send

Attire
I've received lots of email inquiring about attire for Friday and Saturday nights. After copious searches and exhaustive scholarship (translation: I copied verbatim what my wife told me), I've come up with the following dictum:

Men: Dockers/slacks, polo (i.e., no tie or sport coat), and dancin' shoes.

Women: Pants/skirt/tee-shirt or sun-dress, and "fun" dancin' shoes. Stockings, I can imagine, would be unbearable.

Attendance Update
We now have email addresses for about 155 classmates. At this writing, we already have 187 folks signed up for the shindig. Although this is already the best-attended reunion ever, Mary Ellis notes that there are usually a lot of last-minute registrations, so 200 is not out of the question.

Things to Do Around Muskogee
If you're desperately looking for something to occupy your spouse's time while you're off schmoozing, here are some interesting things to do (with links to web sites):

  • Fin & Feather Arts and Crafts Show at Lake Tenkiller
  • 5 Tribes Museum
  • WWII Batfish submarine
  • New 3 Rivers Museum
  • OU v South Florida (OSU has a bye)

Deceased Classmates
Just when we think we had it all correct, someone raised doubt about Phil Kenyon. If you have confirming information, one way or the other, about Phil, please email Karen Rose Ritchie ASAP (kritchey@eodd.org).

Saturday Activities
At present, the only daytime activity scheduled on Saturday is golf; about 30 golfers will go off in foursomes, starting at 8:00, not 8:30 as previously reported here.  If you want to participate, send email immediately to reserve your spot. The first tee time is 8:00, and the cost is $30 per person, including cart.

Remember, we have the facilities of the Muskogee Country Club all to ourselves for the weekend, both for the evening shindigs and during the day for informal activities, so feel free to rendezvous with friends there, or just hang out. The bar will be open, too.

Sunday Activities
Sally Cousins Elliot is hosting a pot-luck brunch on Sunday. Details are in the previous newsletter, which are archived on the web site. Note that while the motivation for this activity was for the benefit of late-arrivers, everyone is invited. Sally stresses the informality of this get-together, so ladies, please, no obsessing over fancy eats and drinks. Contact Sally at infoue@utahescapades.com for more info, or just show up.

Registration
Although we would have like all the reservations to be in ahead of time in order to buy food and drink for everyone, don't let lack of registration payment prevent you from coming on the spur of the moment and paying at the door. If you're holding this option open, please let Mary Ellis know via email: maje101@yahoo.com.

If you registered via the web, but haven't paid, please return to the web and pay by credit card (just re-register):

 http://www.campbells.org/Roughers/Register/Index_Register.html

For those of you still sitting on your checks, the mailing address for registration is:

Mary Ellis (Wozniak) Cookson
3737 Eufaula St.
Muskogee, OK 74403

Rates are:
Friday: $20/person
Saturday: $30/person

Roughers '62 Reunion "Scholarship" Fund

Recognizing the current tough economic times, I have created a "Roughers '62 Scholarship Fund," which is available for the asking to any classmate who is unable to attend the reunion because of lack of money. I encourage you to contribute.

TO CONTRIBUTE: I have created a contribution page on the Rougher's web site using PayPal, the same company that handles credit-card transactions for eBay and for our reunion registrations. If you are able to contribute to this fund, visit the web site or just click here

  • No contribution is too small.

  • The Reunion Committee is not involved in this activity, but I welcome its contribution.

  • I am sole executor of the funds, and promise to hold your name and the amount of your contribution confidential.

  • Funds will be awarded on a first-come-first-served basis, without qualification of need.

  • After the reunion, unused funds will be redistributed to the original contributors in proportion to their contribution. No accounting will be provided.

Time is short, so please act quickly.

TO APPLY: If you'd like to apply for a scholarship, know someone who needs it, or would like to apply on someone's behalf, ) or phone me at (510) 526-0616. Because the demand for and the amount of funds aren't predictable, I can't make any promises, but I can guarantee absolute confidentiality. There is no obligation to repay the funds.

Special Room Rate at Best Western
Based upon local feedback, it appears that Best Western is the nicest place to stay (but not necessarily the least expensive). It's new (opened last March), and seems built to high standards. Its location near N. 32nd and the Shawnee Bypass makes it close to the Muskogee Country Club where the scheduled festivities occur. When I made my reservation there, I spoke to the manager. Using my most unctuous manner, I persuaded her to give us the following discount rates:

 Class
Rate

Normal
Rate

Double Room $69 $84
Suite $110 $135

Reservations must be made before Sept 10th. You must use the following toll-free number: 866-239-2002.  This  takes you to the Muskogee hotel, not corporate reservations. Mention that you want the Class of '62 rate; if there are any problems, ask for Marilyn Kates. (All this information is also posted on the web site, under "Where to Stay in Muskogee.")

If you made your reservations at Best Western without knowledge of these rates, just phone the number above and ask that your reservation be converted to the special rate.

Odds 'n Ends

  • Suggestion Box on Rougher's Web Site
We've received a number of excellent ideas from the Suggestion Box on the web site. (We got a few gripes, too, but no world-class rants as I'd hoped.) It's never too late, so feel free to contribute.

Staying in Contact After the Reunion    Several folks sent in suggestions asking for a way to stay in touch after the reunion. Accordingly, I intend to set up a Roughers62 list-mailer. A list-mailer is simple to use: when any member of the list sends an email addressed to the Group, everyone subscribed to the Group receives a copy of the email. You can reply either to the entire Group, or just to the person who sent the email. I'll have full details in the post-reunion newsletter.

Current Home Towns on Web Site   It was suggested that web site list not only the email address on the web site, but also current home towns. This sounds like a good suggestion, as it would enable classmates to contact each other when traveling or visiting nearby.

  • I retained my original, high-resolution scans of the yearbook. If you'd like to have copies on a CD, me.
  • Yearbook Photos on the Roughers Web Site     Lost your yearbook? Forgot what everyone looked like? Forgot what you looked like? Well the yearbook photos for the entire Senior Class of 1962, are now on the Roughers web site. I finally received a few current photos, which are now posted on the Roster page next to the yearbook photos.

  • Thanks, Volunteers      We owe the large turnout to all the classmates worked hard at tracking folks down. Although I'm no longer trying to initiate anymore systematic searches, it's not too late for you to contact people you'd like to see at the reunion. Contact me for addresses and phone numbers.

  • Alert! Wrong Dates Published  Apparently I mistyped the dates for the reunion on one page of the web site. My apologies for any confusion.  The correct dates are Friday and Saturday, Sept 27 and 28.
  • Eddie Jeffries passed away recently. He was the best teacher I ever had--from grade school through college. I remember him walking around the classroom, ruler in hand.  At random times he would whack his ruler loudly on a desk. This was the signal for the entire class to shout in unison, F=MA! Many years later I borrowed his pedagogical technique when I taught electronics at a local college. When I slapped my ruler down, the class shouted, E=IR! Rest in Peace, Jeff.
  • Bounced emails Email sent to the people listed below have bounced. Please click if you know their correct email address.

    Admire, Joe Chenault, Lenora
    Haught, Linda  Hamlin, Paul
    Barthel, Janice  Nicholson, Jerry

  • Deceased Classmates  The response to the listing of deceased classmates was very positive. If you have any contributions to this list, please send them along, and, of course, if there are any errors on the list, immediately.
  • Classmates.com Sand-baggers  As I mentioned in previous newsletters, we've been try to shake people out of the Classmates.com web site. Of the 90 some-odd classmates registered there, 22 have still not responded. I give up.

Best,

(for the Reunion Committee)
Berkeley, CA
